The EU chips act was already largely a failure and they threw plenty of money at it. The problem with the Europe is they look to their bureaucrats to stimulate things then expect different results from the last 50 times.

Europe needs its own private industry that attracts talent and capital. It doesn’t need another EU press release talking about hopes and dreams

Yep, the proof is in the pudding. They managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory again when US got TSMC to open a fab there.

For example, both German and Austrian semiconductor companies are choosing to expand manufacturing in Malaysia and not domestically.

I don't know what more proof people need that the EU is cooked on manufacturing side.

The definition of insanity. This is a mentality problem and is deeply ingrained into the EU population. European people are always looking at the state to solve any problems including those of industry and free market, without realizing the state mostly isn't good at those things and they'd actually be better off with less government there. Whenever the state intervenes into the economy it just further supports the massive bloated legacy companies who lobby the politicians never the startup ecosystem. And then people mistake again by voting for more government hoping to fix that which just results in more expensive bloat and more red tape nor a competitive freer market with more capital and innovation.

Hey, it worked for the USSR, right? ;)

I don’t see how Cursor differs in that regard. They have an agent management system since Cursor 3 and some feature that offloads agents to the background or cloud which I haven’t used yet. I always just keep chat windows open if it’s running because I’m always watching that stuff closely.

Seems more like an advanced/niche feature for people who go really hard into LLMs IMO

I use Cursor with the Claude code plugin because Cursors autocomplete is really good and I like the way Cursor is set up. But it’s definitely a UX downgrade using a plugin instead of the builtin Cursor agent stuff which I do miss. Claude with Max are just a safer bet economically these days than a cursor plan.

I except that model and pricing gap to narrow over time though

I also had a problem with Cursor auto switching on fast mode which I would never use otherwise.

Cursor really needs a stronger model than Composer 2 which is the root of the problem. Hopefully they will put out something better now that they have better datacenter access with SpaceX.

Yes that was very annoying considering the 5x cost increase for fast. I can wait it's fast enough.

Same I’d pay for Cursor again if they get more price competitive with Claude max

There are already opt out buttons for training in Cursor and Claude Code… if you don’t want it then turn it off. If it was worth enough money to them they would offer a monetary incentive like discounts but none of them have yet

They are talking about the millions of lines of code they stole to make the product in the first place and I'm sure you know that.

HN has always discussed business

Article is very light on details

Dario has always prattled on about how Anthropic is more safe than OpenAI and made a big point about guardrails and protecting society from “AGI”. This is the consequences. Some people actually drink the kool aid, especially bureaucrats and bigco lawyers (basically the same group).

Not to mention intelligence agencies look for any information advantage they can get to influence policy.

If you think the Trump administration is doing this out of good faith, I disagree. They get no benefit of the doubt; they're pissed they can't use Mythos to target every American for surveillance or create a top-of-the-line killer drone program without pushback from private companies.

Both can be true, no? The administration has a vendetta (justified or not), and Anthropic's behavior gave them a reason to act on it.

We’re all just going to use Opus, GPT or Gemini let’s be honest

Chinese models have become really good and cheap. MiMo V2.5 Pro, Kimi K2.7-code, Minimax M3 etc

Maybe a year ago I’d agree but the gap has grown. I also pay for Cursor which is based on Kimi and there is no comparison for complex code gen vs Fable. It mostly succeeds well at small rapid fire stuff which is the only reason I pay for it (plus the IDE DX). But any heavy feature planning and prototyping I use Claude.

I predict they will all be mostly the same in 5+ yrs but coding is serious work and companies aren’t going to pay for almost good.

What do you mean, companies are already paying for almost good. Coding is indeed serious work and not even Fable is good enough for serious work.
