Never understood why anyone would use Google Home or Amazon Echo when we all have phones.

A DSLR camera is better than a phones camera, a voice assisting device seems replaceable however.

Basically

a) because some of them have semi-decent speakers for music

b) because it's nice not to have to pull out your phone (especially while cooking)

Open source projects are only successful when they make what they replace obsolete. This worked with Linux and GCC but this isn't gonna work with LLM's.

Who's gonna pay to power an open source AI? Will it perform well enough to make Chat-GPT and Claude obsolete?

Codex does this in VSCode as well.

Compilations break all the time and those symbols either become useless or it’s just quicker to use grep.

I’m not thrilled about any sort of Apple AI. I see it more as the convenience of platform lock in that ideally would be in the hands of all serious AI contenders but we all know that’ll never happen.

Every mainstream product seems to have their own “SmarterChild on steroids” bolted on top (Gemini for Google, Rovo for jira, Copilot for Microsoft everything, etc).

I’ll still use the serious ones like ChatGPT/Claude as my main but I think these companies know that and are just trying to jump the bandwagon so they don’t look outdate. Either way, they can be surprisingly convenient and make up for UI/UX learning curves.

What else would they have produced with banana crops that people would’ve wanted?

More banana varieties. The reason Panama Disease was so successful is because of the practice of cloning. Every single crop is the same genetics. Researchers warned that starting over with the Cavendish would result in the exact same thing again and the clear solution was to stop cloning the exact same plant and grow more types of bananas (there are more than 1,000 species of banana and tens of thousands of varieties around the world).

Now we're dealing with TR4 because of the Cavendish being grown in the exact same way but with an even heavier reliance on pesticides, slavery, and violent control over local power.

And they aren't even cloning anything even close to the tastiest bananas, just the ones best suited for transport/storage.

I don't eat bananas I can buy in Europe, not after doing some travels. They are extremely bland, doesn't matter where I buy them. Now when traveling in exotic countries, what a beautiful experience to taste one!

"Exotic countries" lol. There's at least a few species in the banana genus that grow in almost every single country in the global south

That was a fun bit of trivia I learned from Balatro - the Gros Michel has a one in six chance of being destroyed after a round. However, if it is destroyed (the game displays Extinct! when it perishes), then the Cavendish can appear randomly in the shop and has a one in one-thousand chance of being destroyed.

We’re gonna be streaming games as the norm soon anyway so I could care less.

This reads like an ant screaming at someone’s foot before they get stomped.

Ferrari’s are supposed to look sexy.

This looks like if an iPod Mini had sex with a Norelco Shaver.

The more specific your work is, the more these LLM’s seem to struggle.

If your work was previously googling stack overflow, it can be incredibly useful at working through that. Which let’s face it, that’s what a lot of us do.
