Starling Bank (UK) locks out GrapheneOS users due to Custom ROM policy (github.com/privsec-dev)

The engineering lead seems confused as to either what GrapheneOS is or what "custom ROMs" mean:

> the Starling Bank application does not support jailbroken or rooted devices and custom ROMs. [...]

> However, in this case, it appears that we are inadvertently preventing the app from being used on non-rooted GrapheneOS devices. This is not a deliberate change and we are investigating what has caused this change in behaviour.

Here's hoping that catching on won't mean turning back on this not being deliberate, but rather a reconsideration of their policy...

the engineering lead seems like he has a good relationship with their legal team. The tone of voice shift between "we don't disclose all information to protect customer security" just before disclosing additional information is deafening.

It seems like he knows what he's doing and the debug time is just taking a while to work though their undeniable slow process.

I'm confused why this is on HN, this is just boring process from a large corporation actually behaving well.

People with rooted devices can easily circumvent their half baked "security measures"
